Hi! I'm trying to research my 3xGreat-Grandfather William Hammond (b. about 1796) and his wife Esther Hammond (also b. about 1796) Esther's maiden name is believed to be Bigelow). They show up in the 1860 US Census in Clearfield County. I have seen an 1830 US Census entry for William Hammond that I believe to be the same William Hammond in Cambria County. If possible I would like to find his father, mother, brothers and sisters if any, when and where William and Esther were born and died. One other circumstantial bit that I've found is a reference to a Methodist Episcopal Church Rev. John Hammond in Clearfield County in 1822 at the Aldrich History Project Chapter XXI, History of the Borough of Clearfield which is at www.pa-roots.com/clearfield/aldrich/chap21.html. The timing seems right to be William's father, but that is speculation on my part. I was wondering if anyone has any references that could help me out, any research suggestions, etc. Thank you!! Any assistance is greatly appreciated!!! Sincerely, Joel

I am also researching William through his son George Washington. I have found information that William might have been alive as late as 1863. I have a record that says George was born in York County possibly? The Methodist thing would make sense. I have Catholic records of George (he married a Catholic woman) saying that one or both parents were Catholic. George eventually converted as I believe a brother also did (in order to marry a different Catholic woman.) Been trying to find out about William for years myself, so understand your frustration!

I was just searching through the PA archives this week. I found William's will. He died in Clearfield County (in Beccaria township). His will was probated in May/June 1867 (the handwriting was very difficult to read.) His will lists none of his children, only his wife Esther Elizabeth (whom I can only assume was alive at the time.) He names an executor, but it is not any of his children. don't know if this helps or not....

Thank you for the information. I apologize for the delay, but my old account appears to have been deleted.
I too found the information about Reverend John Hammond, but I've not been able to find more information about him.
My great-great grandfather George Washington Hammond converted to Catholicism at Carrolltown , PA. Some of the records and bible records that I've seen show that many members of our family were married at that church.
I did find a reference regarding the conversion in a Catholic records book where it was noted that George Washington Hammond was from York County, PA. George's wife Anna Mary Haybauer. She was Bayern Germany and came here with her father around 1840ish. There were many spellings of their name so I'm not sure about the real spelling.
George Washington's father according to a document written by George's daughter says that William was orphaned and eventually was working on a farm in southern PA so York fits the story. One day not long after my original post I received an email from a lady in Nevada. We determined that her great-great grandmother Sarah Elizabeth Hammond (there were 2 in the family) and George Washington Hammond were brother and sister. Sarah's family moved to Iowa then further westward. The lady from Nevada did some research and was able to find William Hammond was baptized in a church in Cumberland, MD. It showed the mother was still alive, but the father also William had died. I'm hoping to update the same information on ancestry.com soon. I think I've said everything I know at this point. Please let me know if you have questions.
