The first Lawhead came to the town of Clearfield in 1833, he was Nathan Lawhead and his wife Catharine Ludwig Lawhead. They lived on Market Street just before the river. With them were all of their children who had been born in Centre County after they came there from Lancaster County. I suspect many of these older Lawheads were buried in the Old Clearfield Cemetery across the road from Hillcrest. I hope this is the cemetery you are talking about on page 45-46 of Fall 2008 bulletin. I know there are Lawheads there but I can no longer travel to visit the cemetery. Most of our relatives are at Centre Cemetery just south of Hyde and I have given the Historical Society a copy of our survey. I can be contacted at cwhite727@yahoo.com.

Yes, we are indexing the old Clearfield Cemetery, est. 1838. We are not finished yet, but so far we do have three Lawheads buried here: Albert, died 1892, Alice, died 1888 and Amorvin, died 1873. Cathie CCHS

It is tragic to see a church abandon an old cemetery like the Old Catholic Cemetery at Hillsdale. I sent some relatives from New Jersey there to look for ancestors. They sent me pictures of badly damaged stones and someone told them people use the stones for target practice. I know when I was there in 2000 the word was the only reason things are not overgrown is the power company needed to get to their lines. My great-grandfather, David RP Ball, and many of his relatives are buried there. For example; Alice McKean and Louise Blose. The Duckett and Leavy names were very prominent on other stones.
It was wonderful though the Calvary Catholic Cemetery was well documented by the Catholic Church and they were very helpful. Good well kept records.
